Baby Stepping

Have I mentioned that this is a little overwhelming to me?

Because it is.

There's just a lot going on in my personal live right now. This certainly isn't a convenient time to overhaul Little Dude's diet. I mean, is there ever? But really not now. But we're doing it anyway, because it's what he needs. So here's how it's going down and why you shouldn't feel bad if your journey is off to a slower start than you'd like. While it's great to jump in with both feet or hit the ground running or any number of other cliches, it's also okay to take a couple slow, shaky steps, then fall, and get up and try again. It's okay to take baby steps.

Eventually, Little Dude will eat all the meals and snacks with all the right proportions of carbs, protein, and fat. He will have the same brand of heavy cream in his cup and the same brand of cheese on his plate. His fruit and veggies will be meticulously measured to ensure that he gets five grams of carbs per meal: no more, no fewer.

For now...not so much.

For now, he is getting the right ingredients. I look at the suggested meal ideas and the goal proportions, and I put the food on his plate. He gets a small handful of blueberries, not exactly 1/2 cup. He gets a couple pieces of turkey, not two ounces. And the turkey? It might have some stuff added to it that he really shouldn't be having. I've made a couple "safe" recipes, but I don't know the exact nutrition information because, believe it or not, cheddar cheese is not exactly the same from one brand to the next. Who knew?

But that's okay. Because we're moving in the right direction.

I've found the magical brand of heavy cream that has no carbs or sneaky ingredients. I've settled on a cheddar and parmesan cheese that both tick all the boxes and are available at several of the stores near me. (Mozzarella is being a little bit more difficult, but I'll get there, too.) I've tried a few winning recipes and even made a Little Dude-approved birthday cake for the big day!

So if you're just getting started, with modified Atkins, with keto, with an exercise program, with developing a new habit, it's okay. You're doing great. Take a deep breath. Be a little better than you were yesterday. You've got this. (She said mostly to herself.)
